16 Feb No More Walls
James Nelson is a man with a remarkable story. He spent much of his adult life as a homeless
alcoholic until a near death experience in 1972 caused him to sober up.
James’ autobiography ‘No More Walls’ was first published in 1978, and he has now kindly donated
the sales of his limited edition reprint to Open Door.
The charity were incredibly lucky to meet with his close friend Marion Oxley; this is what she said:
“Back in the early 1970s I was working as a community development officer in Southwark, where I
met a man who was a recovering alcoholic. He’d had a lobotomy and been homeless.
“To cut a long story short I encouraged the man to write his life story, which he did under the pen
name James Nelson. The resulting book, called ‘No More Walls’, was published in 1978.
James and I have remained friends for 45 years, James is now aged 82, and has many friends who
have recently come together and re-published the book. James wants any proceeds of the sale of his
book to go to St Albans Open Door.”
